The Wind and Brass section of the Colchester Symphony Orchestra will join forces once again for a splendid concert of the very best of wind ensemble music. Our concert starts with one of Verdi’s most memorable overtures that has become very well-known through its use in classic film scores and advertisements! It has a sinister motif, though, signifying ‘fate’.
Mozart unusually chose a minor key for this Serenade with a stormy opening that portrays tragedy and anger. Calm is restored in the second movement which is in Eb major. Following a Menuet and Trio (again in a major key), the final movement is a set of variations that start in C minor where each member of the octet has opportunities to ‘showcase’ their instrument. The final variation returns to the major key and the tension is then dissipated. Several years after writing this Wind Serenade Mozart arranged it for a String Quintet.
In contrast to tragedy portrayed by Verdi’s Overture and Mozart’s Serenade, Reinecke’s Octet has joyful flowing melodies. Reinecke studied under Mendelssohn and Schumann and became an influential musician of his time as a composer, conductor and pianist. As Professor of Composition his students included Grieg, Bruch and Janáček.
The ‘Puffin Ensemble’ will also be including some popular classical favourites that are much loved by audiences. Last year's ‘wind and brass’ concert was received with much enthusiasm in St Botholph’s Church in Colchester and this concert is likely to have the same appeal.
